The commemoration of a rescue attempt in New York (1912?) that I should have just absolutely stayed out of, but through my misguided involvement (and too many cocktails) I made everything a whole lot worse and ended up having to be rescued myself.
The flashbacks of this psychotic episode came back to me on an Easy Jet flight to Tenerife when the Air Host was telling the pregnant, nervous flyer next to me how to use (and I think adjust due to the pregnancy) her life vest. I have an almost all-consuming love for merch and had just had some Oopsy Jones pin badges made.
I’d put my stuff on the little fold out table in front of me and one of the badges fell onto the lovely lady next-door. She liked it and I motioned for her to keep it whilst hilariously suggesting she maybe pin it into the life vest around her front, thus puncturing the inflatable and therefore rendering the vest useless.
My very involvement in this lady’s potential plane crash survival had been unnecessary and even worse, it had made her AND HER UNBORN BABY unsafe in the event that this Easy Jet flight to ‘rife would go down into a body of water. (This is genuinely how my brain works).
I immediately thought back to over 100 years ago to my time in New York attempting to save someone and thought, in perhaps one of my wisest moments, that we should help each other as much as possible, sure! But on the rarest of occasions, sometimes it’s just best to stay the hell out of it. A pin in an inflatable life vest seems to sum it up nicely.
